Environmental and Social Impact Assessment and Associated Environmental and Social Management Documents
Disclaimer: Through this Early Disclosure, MIGA provides early access, early in the environmental and social assessment process, to the Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) and associated environmental and social management documents. These documents have been prepared by WKC Middle East Environment Consultancy for Gulf Cooperation Council Interconnection Authority (“GCCIA”) and should not be taken as an indication that MIGA has completed its review of the potential Guarantee. The purpose of this Early Disclosure is to enhance the transparency of MIGA’s activities with reference to the Projects that are categorized as Category A under MIGA’s Policy on Environmental and Social Sustainability (2013). This document should not be construed as presuming the outcome of the decision by MIGA’s Board of Directors. In addition, prior to any consideration of the Guarantee issuance by MIGA's Board of Directors, the Summary of Proposed Guarantee (SPG) and the Environmental and Social Review Summary (ESRS) would be disclosed at least 60 days in advance. The following Early Disclosure is disclosed in accordance with MIGA's Access to Information Policy (2013).
Project description
The Gulf Cooperation Council Interconnection Authority (GCCIA) signed a transmission development and use contract with the Iraqi Ministry of Energy and the General Electricity Transmission Company in the Southern Region in June 2022 to connect the transmission network of El Faw station in Southern Iraq to the interconnection infrastructure of the Gulf Cooperation Countries. The Project will enable Iraq to initially import 500 MW of energy from the Gulf Countries to meet its internal shortage in energy supply (the “Project”). MIGA is requested to provide political risk insurance to GCCIA against the risk of Breach of Contract for a tenor up to 8 years.
Environmental Categorization
The Project is Category A under MIGA’s Policy on Environmental and Social Sustainability (2013).
