Antigua and Barbuda Becomes 166th Member of Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency

WASHINGTON, DC, September 27, 2005—The Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency, MIGA, a member of the World Bank Group, today announced the addition of the dual island-nation of Antigua and Barbuda to its membership rolls. The addition brings MIGA’s membership to 166.

”We are very pleased that Antigua and Barbuda is now a member of MIGA,” said Yukiko Omura, the agency’s Executive Vice President. “As a truly global organization, MIGA welcomes working with smaller states and supporting foreign investments through our political risk insurance and technical assistance.”

On completion of the membership process, Hon. Dr. L. Errol Cort, Minister of Finance and the Economy, government of Antigua and Barbuda, said: “It is our government’s policy to encourage private sector-led growth, and we see Antigua and Barbuda’s membership in MIGA as a foundation to attracting foreign direct investment to our islands. We see the government’s work in this regard as creating an enabling environment to provide the necessary encouragement to the private sector, and we look forward to working with MIGA on this.”

H.E. Deborah-Mae Lovell, Ambassador, Embassy of Antigua and Barbuda, Permanent Mission of Antigua and Barbuda to the OAS, added:  “We look forward to MIGA membership helping with the economic development of our country.”
