World Bank Group guarantees are helping unlock Burundi’s coffee industry by supporting private investment, strengthening value chains, and connecting smallholder farmers to global markets.
A person wearing a patterned headscarf and colorful clothing pours coffee cherries and water through a cloth filter over a basin, while several others stand nearby in an outdoor market setting with sacks and tables in the background.

Tsutomu Yamamoto, Managing Director, MIGA, visited Sucafina's coffee operations to see how guarantees absorb risk so private investment can move, even in fragile markets. For smallholder farmers, the shift is from selling locally to reaching global markets. And for Burundi, it's part of a broader push to open and strengthen the coffee sector.

On the ground, that means direct links to international buyers, more women farmers in the value chain, and jobs and steadier incomes.
