World Bank Group's Investment Information Service Teams with Northern Light to Provide Expanded Content and Search Capabilities

Washington, October 2, 1998 — The Investment Promotion Network (IPAnet), the World Bank Group's on-line information clearinghouse for companies engaged in cross-border investment, will now feature expanded Web search capabilities and access to more than 4,500 business and technical periodicals through a partnership with Northern Light, the leading on-line research service, under the terms of an agreement announced today at the World Bank/IMF Annual Meetings.

About Northern Light

Northern Light Technology LLC — developer of the world's first research engine, provides enterprises and individuals with easy, instantaneous, and affordable access to highly relevant, quality information. Northern Light combines an on-line business library of 4,500 trusted, full-text sources and the contents of the World Wide Web to deliver the most comprehensive results available. This on-line service features exclusive classification and organization technology allowing users to more quickly find the information they need. Through this new partnership, IPAnet users can directly launch searches of the Web and Northern Light's Special Collection research library which includes authoritative sources such as Euromoney, Asian Business, InfoLatina, Insititutional Investor and the Banker. This extensive content and functionality will significantly augment the many investment-specific resources already available through IPAnet.

About the Investment Promotion Network (IPAnet)

Developed and operated by the World Bank Group’s Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency (MIGA), IPAnet has become a focal point on the World Wide Web for the international investment community, with users from more than 180 countries. Through IPAnet, which is a free service although registration is required, users can access a wealth of country and sector-specific resources, news and events, investment project profiles as well as an on-line directory of international investment organizations and professionals. Now in its third year of operation, IPAnet’s databases catalog over 8000 information resources drawn from over 450 investment-related organizations — providing a growing pool of information on investment conditions, legal and regulatory issues -- as well as over 1600 foreign direct investment opportunities in emerging markets worldwide.

Commenting on this new service, Karin Millett, General Manager of MIGA’s Investment Marketing Services Department, said, "This new relationship with Northern Light brings many valuable resources to the community of international investment professionals which IPAnet serves. We have found that Northern Light's unique combination of Web search capabilities and cost-effective access to business periodicals and research sources make it an excellent alternative to traditional business information services."

Leslie Ray, Director of Partnership Marketing for Northern Light, notes, "Investment professionals need instantaneous access to a broad range of industry, economic and political information and analysis. Northern Light is pleased to join with MIGA in offering a comprehensive package of information resources to IPAnet users."

Northern Light Technology, headquartered in Cambridge, MA, was founded by a seasoned management team of librarians, business-to-business and Internet professionals who recognized the need to fill the gap left by search engines and private research services. Northern Light introduced its research engine in August of 1997 and has since received many accolades, including the CIO Web Business Magazine’s 50/50 Award for "innovative Internet and Intranet initiatives by organizations around the world."
