By combining our political risk expertise with the financial capacity of our Development Finance Institutions (DFIs) and Multilateral Development Banks (MDBs) partners, we support complex, high-impact transactions in markets where coordinated institutional engagement is essential.
How We Work Together
Our DFI and MDB partnerships operate across several modalities:
- Co-Guarantees: MIGA and partner institutions share guarantee exposure on a single transaction, allowing each to deploy capital within its mandate while giving investors and lenders a broader, more credible risk cover.
- Risk Sharing Arrangements: We structure risk-sharing agreements that distribute exposure efficiently across institutions, extending the reach of each partner's balance sheet.
- Joint Transaction Development: We work with DFI partners at the deal structuring stage to identify where MIGA's guarantee products complement other forms of DFI support — debt, equity, or technical assistance — and how to sequence them for maximum impact.
- Platform Coordination: As the host institution of the World Bank Group Guarantees Platform, MIGA plays a central coordinating role in aligning guarantee instruments across the World Bank Group to deliver a unified response to complex investment environments.
The WBG Guarantees Platform
MIGA serves as the host institution for the World Bank Group Guarantees Platform, which brings together MIGA, IBRD, IDA, and IFC guarantee instruments under a coordinated framework. The Platform maximizes the WBG's collective ability to mobilize private capital by enabling seamless deployment of the right combination of guarantee instruments for each transaction and market context.
Partnership Principles and Modalities
The MIGA Partnership Handbook sets out the principles that guide our DFI and MDB partnerships, including governance frameworks, risk-sharing structures, and operational modalities for co-guarantee arrangements.
