Sectoral Overview
MIGA guarantees cover projects in a broad range of sectors and subsectors, with projects in the financial sector accounting for the largest share (47 percent) of the agency’s outstanding portfolio at the close of fiscal year 2009. The high exposure in the sector is largely the result of MIGA’s support to the banking sector in 2009.
At 35 percent of MIGA’s outstanding gross portfolio, the infrastructure sector is a priority focus for the agency. MIGA has a comparative advantage in supporting complex infrastructure investments, particularly when it comes to cash-intensive investments that involve municipal governments, and when it comes to securing financing at better rates and for longer periods.
Oil, gas and mining accounts for 7 percent, and agribusiness, manufacturing and services accounts for nearly 11 percent of the agency’s gross exposure.
