Doraleh Container Terminal Sets New Standards for Africa's Ports In December 2007, MIGA underwrote $427 million in guarantees supporting the construction of the Doraleh Container Terminal in Djibouti. The transaction was an important milestone for MIGA as it was the agency’s first-ever guarantee for Shariah-compliant project financing. The project was also named Project Finance magazine’s African Transport/Ports Deal of the Year for 2007. Since its opening in December 2008, the port has broken new ground in efficiency and security standards. It is also helping the poor nation of Djibouti become a trade gateway for East Africa. |

MIGA Cover Helps Private Equity Funds Investing in Sierra Leone MIGA recently signed master contracts of guarantee with two private equity funds that are planning investments in a number of small and medium-size enterprises in Sierra Leone. The contracts reserve MIGA’s capacity to provide political risk insurance for up to 12 of the funds’ individual investments totaling an estimated $16.2 million. The agency’s commitment to underwrite the planned investments is providing additional assurance needed in a difficult financial market. |
