Keeping the Private Sector Thriving in West Bank and Gaza

Since the scope of the MIGA-administered West Bank and Gaza Investment Guarantee Trust Fund was broadened in 2008, the fund has supported several new investments in the Palestinian Territories. These include agricultural enterprises, dairy products and packaging enterprises, and a beverage company. The new investments are generating jobs, contributing to foreign exchange earnings, and delivering new technology.

MIGA Supports First Power-Sector Credit Facility Agreement in Bangladesh

In Bangladesh, the planned 450-megawatt combined-cycle gas-fired Ashuganj South power plant is expected to provide nearly 12,000 households with electricity. MIGA is backing a financing package arranged by HSBC of the United Kingdom to the state-owned utility that will operate the plant. MIGA's guarantee of $221 million is providing long-term coverage against the risk of non-honoring of sovereign financial obligations.

Eco-Friendly Bamboo Production Facility in Nicaragua Boosts Country's Exports

MIGA is providing coverage for an equity investment in Nicaragua by U.S.-based EcoPlanet Bamboo Group (EPB). The company is converting degraded land in the El Rama area into commercial bamboo plantations for the sale and export of sustainably grown and harvested bamboo fiber. EPB Group plans to establish a pre-processing facility for the production and sale of its Forest Stewardship Council-certified bamboo fiber to U.S. and multinational timber manufacturers.

Expanded Power Plant in Cote d'Ivoire will be Largest Independent Power Generator in West Africa

Cote d'Ivoire's ongoing recovery is being facilitated by significant levels of foreign direct investment. In January, MIGA provided investment guarantees covering Globeleq's equity investment into the Azito thermal power plant. The investment will convert the plant from simple-cycle to combined-cycle, bringing the plant’s total capacity to approximately 430 megawatts. The expanded plant will produce more electricity without additional use of gas, resulting in 225,000 tons of CO2 emissions avoidance per year.

MIGA Backs Construction and Operation of Oil and Gas Facilities in Cote d'Ivoire 

The expansion of Block CI-27 off the coast of Cote d'Ivoire includes improvements to the existing operational production platform and the construction and operation of a greenfield production platform. The natural gas will be supplied to the Azito facility. MIGA's investment guarantees are backing an equity investment by SCDM Energie SAS of France and a non-shareholder loan arranged by HSBC Bank of the United Kingdom.
