Dubai Conference Looks at Investment Prospects in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA)

In January, MIGA, together with the Dubai International Financial Centre and the Islamic Corporation for Insurance of Investments and Export Credits, hosted a forum exploring the prospects for regional growth in MENA. The forum evaluated the use of effective risk mitigants and the role of development finance institutions in light of constrained financing and increased risk aversion among investors and lenders.

Support for Gaza Strip Investment is a First for MIGA

MIGA is supporting private investment and employment generation in the Gaza Strip by insuring the expansion of a beverage factory in the territory. The guarantees to the project are made available through the MIGA-administered West Bank and Gaza Investment Guarantee Trust Fund.

Burundi's Health Sector Gets Boost from MIGA

The small nation of Burundi is recovering from a 12-year civil war and is struggling to attract much-needed foreign direct investment. MIGA is backing an investment by Medical Exchange Solutions SA of Belgium (MXS) that will deliver technology solutions to strengthen the management and operations of Burundi's health sector.

Workshop Looks at Liberia's Charcoal Industry

Charcoal is the main source of cooking and heating fuel in Liberia. Though the estimated value of the industry is between $15 and $20 million, it is largely unregulated. A workshop supported through MIGA's Environmental and Social Challenges Fund for Africa sought to examine the challenges facing the industry and to develop suggestions for the sector's long-term sustainability.
