Kosovo Joins World Bank Group Institutions, MIGA

The Republic of Kosovo became the newest member of the five World Bank Group institutions on June 29, 2009. This brought MIGA’s membership to 174. MIGA can now consider applications for political risk insurance cover from eligible investors for investments into Kosovo. Investors from Kosovo going into MIGA’s developing member countries may also apply for coverage.

MIGA Preparing for Economic Recovery 

MIGA is proactively positioning for the global economic recovery predicted for next year. Operationally, MIGA is developing its business strategy in four main sectors: Infrastructure; Finance and Telecommunications; Agribusiness, Manufacturing, and Services; and Oil, Gas, Mining, Chemicals and Energy. Recently appointed sector leaders for these areas discuss their initial views on the challenges and opportunities ahead.

Information Key to Foreign Investment 

The Global Investment Promotion Benchmarking 2009 report, jointly produced by IFC, MIGA, and the World Bank, surveys the performance of national and sub-national investment promotion intermediaries in 181 countries. It finds that over 70 percent of government investment-promotion intermediaries miss out on investment and job-creating opportunities by failing to provide accurate and timely information to potential investors. This report uses a methodology originally piloted by MIGA.

Coordinated Response to the Crisis in Africa

MIGA joined the African Financial Partnership initiative under which the largest multilateral investors and lenders have pledged to provide at least an additional US$15 billion to support the region severely affected by the global economic slowdown. MIGA will make available up to $2 billion of guarantees to support investment in infrastructure, small and medium-sized enterprises, and the financial sector.
