MIGA and the African Development Corporation Sign Innovative Contract

A contract between MIGA and the African Development Corporation (ADC) is helping ADC raise funds for its planned investments in several countries in sub-Saharan Africa. Under a “master contract” MIGA will provide political risk coverage for up to 20 of ADC’s planned small-scale investments in the banking, real estate, information technology, telecommunications, agriculture, and service sectors.

MIGA Teams up with the World Bank, IFC, EBRD, and EIB to Help Banks in Eastern Europe 

Eastern Europe’s largest multilateral investors and lenders have pledged to provide up to €24.5 billion to support the banking sector in the region and to fund lending to businesses hit by the global economic crisis. MIGA is planning to provide political risk insurance capacity of up to €2 billion for bank lending.

Executive Vice President Izumi Kobayashi Addresses Mining Conference 

At the annual Mining Indaba in Cape Town, South Africa, MIGA EVP Izumi Kobayashi urged industry players to stay engaged in sub-Saharan Africa despite the challenging economic times. She also said that although the mining industry has faced significant shocks in the last six months, there is still potential in the sector. “The current crisis will eliminate many marginal projects. However, MIGA believes there many good projects still out there, with good longer term results if they are structured correctly.”

MIGA Tackles Declining FDI Levels and Growth Prospects in Vulnerable Economies

The World Bank Group is mobilizing its resources—financing, advice, guarantees, and partnerships—to help countries manage the economic downturn. Political risk insurance, or guarantees, can play a crucial role in improving credit when the global financial sector is suffering from a severe lack of confidence. In 2008 MIGA issued several guarantees in support of loans to banks in Ukraine and the Russian Federation. MIGA is currently developing a range of new instruments that will help the agency respond rapidly in times of crisis.
